Mary's Humility
Divine Intimacy #176
I always try to begin my writing by asking [someone] what I should write. How will I be a conduit for you, my Lord, Father, Holy Spirit, Saint, or Blessed Mother? Tell me what should be heard.
I felt Mary chuckled when I asked what she wanted me to write today. After all, the topic was humility. Mary would probably prefer not to be talked about; she’d rather we talk about her Son! I think Mary’s character was stronger than it seemed at first glance. She was focused, as revealed in her simplicity, obedience, and desire to please. To her, every event, circumstance, and gift in her life was attributed to God, and she remained firm in her humility. She stood on no soapbox; she stood only next to her Son in all things. That humility brought even more grace.

Humility is not always easy. We do good and pride ourselves on doing things right, and yes, on having people notice. We urgently need to be affirmed, raised up, or praised. It’s our human nature. But Mary had none of it. She deferred it all.
Regardless of the vocation we choose in life, whether marriage, singleness, consecration, or the priesthood, it is of no value without humility. We are not God, nor are we lesser gods, even when we think we should be. We are not in control. What we accomplish is due to the divine graces and favors we have saved up! God is the one who will create the good and fix the bad. Our work is to be humble of heart, turning to Him in all things and offering our nothingness. He will show you the work of your hands! (Psalm 90:17)
It goes against the grain, I know. Jesus said it wouldn’t be easy, but it would be worth it. You are worth it. Humility does not mean lowering your self-worth; it means choosing the other over yourself.
